HOW WAS IT LIKE WHEN YOU STARTED OFF YOUR BUSINESS? PLEASE SHARE YOUR INITIAL EXPERIENCE.

Oh boy, the beginning was definitely rough! However, my struggles had more to do with family acceptance than it did with my business. I had been fresh out of college when I started Paper Game Co, and opting out of a socio-normative corporate job in favor of starting my own business did not garner my parents’ approval (and I don’t blame them)! But after a while, I think they have come to terms with my decision. They are actually quite supportive of me now, after seeing how hard I am working to reach my dreams.

Living somewhere in a secluded cabin in rural New Zealand! In all honesty, though, I have no idea. I would like to be in a position where I am financially sound and location independent enough to pursue my other passions, such as traveling. YOUR SHOP IS SO COLORFUL! AND CONGRATULATIONS ON DOING SO WELL. PLEASE TELL US, WHAT IS YOUR SHOP ABOUT?

Easy Life Planners was set up to help ordinary people organize and plan their daily activities in an efficient and pain-free way. It helps to have everything organized and written down so that you don’t have to rely on your memory. At times it can be overwhelming to think about what you have to cook for tomorrow, what plans you have made, what you have to do urgently and which things can wait until later but can’t be forgotten. We, therefore, made planners for ourselves, and this then gave birth to the idea of opening a shop on Etsy. Four years later we are now broadening our range of products, offering printable posters and stickers.

WERE THE FIRST FEW SALES TROUBLESOME FOR YOU? TELL US HOW YOU MANAGED THE INITIAL STRUGGLE (IF AT ALL YOU FACED ANY).

To get the first sale was difficult. To make a sale your product has to be good. However, if there is poor marketing, nobody will find out whether or not the product really is good. It is therefore important to have good photos of the products to ensure that the customers click to go to the sales page. The description also has to capture people’s attention. However, neither of these are worth anything if the title and the keywords are not well chosen. No matter how good the product is if it doesn’t appear until page 10 nobody will find it. Therefore the most important thing is to choose the title and the keywords.

 

THIS MIGHT SEEM TRICKY, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF AS A PERSON? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD CHANGE?

I’m quite shy and an introvert, and I suppose that it is probably something that I would like to change. Here in Spain, everybody talks a lot and talks loudly. Shy, introverted people like me don’t often get the opportunity to speak much. However, I’m thankful for Spain and its culture because I’ve been thrown in at the deep end and I’m learning to swim or to find my voice as it were.

HOW DID THE WHOLE IDEA TO HAVE A SHOP STRIKE YOU? LET’S HEAR THE STORY.

Initially, our thought was that we needed a way to support our yarn budget…plus, we were running out of space at home to store all our finished dolls! We were both a little nervous as to whether we were good enough to sell our dolls and whether anyone would even buy them. Eventually, we made the decision that we were going to take the plunge and launched our Etsy shop in 2015. Since then, we evolved into the roles of mum as doll maker (as she has better quality control) and daughter as pattern maker (as the frustrated artist who can’t draw).

HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOU’RE RUNNING ON SCHEDULE? DO YOU HAVE ANY STRICT PLAN THAT YOU FOLLOW?

We don’t really follow a strict plan. Each finished doll creation we have for sale takes about 8 days to make. As such, there is a natural cycle with how quickly those dolls are turned over. As for the patterns, at minimum, we aim to release one a month but this can be more if the creative juices are flowing (and if real work doesn’t get in the way) or this can be slightly delayed depending on other deadlines to be met.

 

 

WE’D LOVE IT IF YOU COULD SHARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE SHOP IN THE COMING YEARS.

My gifted creativity began as a child in the basement of my Long Island, NY home by crafting gifts for my large Italian family. While in the US Navy, my travels brought me to Charleston, SC where I fell in love with the beaches and the cal community of fine arts and where I now call home.

Years later, I found myself faced with a serious medical diagnosis that reminded me how precious life is. Inspired by life, and my desire to pursue my love of ceramics, I brushed off my smock and got to work! Some say I didn’t realize the severity of my cancer, but I say otherwise. Setting up shop in my garage I took a leap of faith and invested my savings in a kiln. I believe by staying in my “happy place”, I found the strength needed to survive. On that day, ‘Creativity Happens’ was born and is now eight years strong.

YOUR SHOP HAS SUCH A MAGICAL FEEL TO IT. AND, CONGRATULATIONS ON THAT HUGE NUMBER OF SALES! SO, HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH YOUR SHOP IDEA?

Thank you! I am a multi-passionate artist so at the time I began my Etsy shop, I was doing so many different things. It was the platform of Etsy itself that inspired me to make an indie perfume line because there were not many other people doing it at the time (2008) and there was so much that I wanted to create visually and conceptually around it that did not yet exist. I had been blending botanical perfumes for myself and friends, and I just naturally transitioned into this indie brand.

It started off smoothly but it was very small. I had no business plan or ambition to do anything beyond Etsy. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR UNUSUAL BOOKMARKS! OH AND WITH THAT NUMBER OF SALES, KUDOS TO YOU! WE’RE CURIOUS TO KNOW, WHAT MADE YOU START YOUR SHOP?

The idea for the leggy bookmarks came to me in a very visual way. I was at my friend’s home when in the middle of the mess in the kids’ room, I saw a doll lying in a book with its legs sticking out of it.
Instead of asking anyone their opinion about this concept, I decided to check whether they would buy it or not. The only effective way to see if the product will bring money as “simply talking about it is all theoretical”.
By the time I made my first bookmark, I have already had a shop on Etsy, where I had been selling handmade jewelry, which I eventually stopped doing as it was more time-consuming yet less popular than the bookmark project.

SO HOW IS IT COMING ALONG, OF LATE? ARE YOU HAPPY WITH WHERE YOU ARE?

Yes, I can say I’m satisfied with my project. But I always think of making some more interesting crazy products, like bracelets, brooches, and magnets. I have many creative ideas.

 

PLEASE TELL US ABOUT ALL THE PEOPLE BEHIND YOUR SHOP! WE KNOW HOW IMPORTANT THEY ALL ARE.

In 2011, I used to sculpt the bookmarks individually, but soon I realized that it was impossible to handle everything myself. The sales grew and I needed more helpers.
In 2013 there were 5 of us and at the present moment, our team consists of 15 people. I still invent the designs and control the process of sculpturing, but my team makes all the process – modeling, painting, packing, doing marketing, providing customer support, do the bookkeeping and so on.
I’ve surrounded myself with happy, warm and genuine people, and we all work like a perfect machine. And one of the best things – we all are really passionate about our work.
